The We the People program promotes civic competence and responsibility among the state’s upper elementary and secondary students. We the People: The Citizen and the Constitution focuses on the United States Constitution and its application. Students not only have to know the Constitution but be able to discuss its relevance, citing court cases and historical facts to support their assertions. It uses authentic assessment in the form of a simulated Congressional hearing and promoting civic discourse. Classes may choose to compete in a state wide competition, the winner of which competes at the National level in Washington D.C.
Project Citizen is an interdisciplinary curricular program for middle, secondary, and post-secondary students, youth organizations, and adult groups that promotes competent and responsible participation in local and state government. The program helps participants learn how to monitor and influence public policy. In the process, they develop support for democratic values and principles, tolerance, and feelings of political efficacy. Students may choose to participate in a National Showcase.
We the People and Project Citizen help satisfy the criterion for the California State Seal of Civic engagement.
